Examining Factors That Influence BIPOC Students’ Enrollment in STEM Postsecondary Majors

Existing research has studied the underrepresentation of Black, Indigenous and People Color (BIPOC) students enrolling in graduating from science, technology, engineering, mathematics (STEM) fields college (e.g., Okahana et al., 2018; Rincón & Lane, 2017). However, there is a dearth that examines precollegiate factors impact whether student majors STEM field (Moakler Kim, 2014). This study uses binary logistic regression moderated to examine influences gender, (math) identity, science career expectations at age 30, high school credit completion have on BIPOC students’ postsecondary major (STEM or non-STEM). Based results, our indicates significantly predict odds enrollment major. In addition, ad hoc analysis confirms gender moderates relationship between identity likelihood collegiate These results can aid researchers practitioners investigating opportunities improve participation for students.
